Carbon Dioxide
CO₂
44.01 g·mol⁻¹○ Non‑polarlinear
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a linear, non‑polar molecule composed of one carbon double‑bonded to two oxygen atoms.
Overview
Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound with the formula CO₂. At standard temperature and pressure it is a gas. In its solid state it is called dry ice. CO₂ has a linear geometry (180° bond angle) with each C=O double bond length of 116.3 pm. Although each C=O bond is polar, the symmetric linear arrangement cancels the dipole, making CO₂ non‑polar. It is a greenhouse gas and a key reactant in photosynthesis.
