Sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, is an ionic compound with the formula NaCl. In the solid state it forms a face‑centred cubic lattice. In the gas phase, discrete Na⁺Cl⁻ ion pairs exist with a bond length of 236 pm. The large electronegativity difference (2.23) results in a very strong dipole. NaCl is essential for human nutrition and is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth.
